Prosperity Bed and Breakfast Missouri

Rating: Yellow

– History:

Prosperity Bed and Breakfast was founded in the once thriving mining town of Prosperity, MO in 1907. Originally constructed as a schoolhouse, the two-story red brick and carthage stone building was built in the heart of the tri-state mining district, which once had thriving buisnesses such as churches, saloons, general stores, and hotels. The schoolhouse closed its doors in 1962 after the student population fell from 1,200 students during the mining boom to a final count of 32 students.

Prosperity School consisted of four large classrooms, divided by two central hallways on both floors. One of the classrooms on the second floor had a stage and was used as the auditorium. Today this building has been converted into a beautiful and elegant romantic getaway and is now better known as the Prosperity School Bed and Breakfast. Janet and Richard Roberts now own the bed and breakfast and have restored this school into a very relaxing and comfortable home away from home. For more information go to

– Investigation Results:

We were excited to be invited to investigate the Prosperity Bed and Breakfast, located in Joplin, MO. We arrived around 7:00 p.m. on January 4, 2007 for our first investigation of the new year. Janet and Richard greeted us at the door and we began our tour of what was a most impressive and beautiful location. Before I get started on the results I would like to thank Janet and Richard for opening up this location and trusting us as a team to conduct our investigation in a professional manner. We began around 7:30 p.m. with a tour of the location and some interesting stories from the owners. Janet and Richard opened the bed and breakfast with the knowledge that the location could possibly be haunted. They were told by locals that the school was “haunted,” but to the Roberts, it was all local folklore. Some of the stories included hauntings by the teachers from the days of the building being a schoolhouse. Thus far, there is no actual evidence of who the resident spirits actually are or why they reside there. The Roberts have an interesting set-up for gathering evidence about their Bed and Breakfast. They do not advertise as haunted. Instead they listen to all reports from people who stay with them, and record what people say they experience. Several customers have experienced similar occurrences!

By the time we toured the building and set up our equipment, it was close to 10:00 p.m. The team split up into three groups, with Ron and his brother, Billy in one group, Lori and another member in another, and the third group taking the rear. Each group took part of the Bed and Breakfast. We didn’t really have much going on until around 10:30 p.m. one member was setting up the motion detectors upstairs and Ron, our medium, was in the Pink Saxton Room, also on the second floor. The rest of the team was downstairs, gathering gear. Suddenly the motion detectors went off for no apparent reason.

Since they were closed for our investigation, the building was not heated that evening. We experienced several cold spots, but we cannot be sure they were paranormal, due to the temperature. Hours after moving the motion detectors downstairs, Lori again experienced the detectors going off for no reason. Our tri-field meter began to experience some disturbances in the field; it kept going off sporadically while sitting stationary on the table in the center of the room. Later that night, Ron picked up a spirit asking, “Can you see me?” Ron replied, “No, I can’t see you,” and again the meter went off. It was as if the spirit was trying to communicate through the meter. We are in the process of going through all of our E.V.P. and pictures. Within five seconds of reviewing Lori’s digital recorder, we were able to hear a distinct woman’s voice saying, “Help me.” We will post any further findings. Overall, we feel the investigation was a huge success and that there definite spiritual activity roaming the halls of the Prosperity School Bed and Breakfast. We will be posting more on our results as it becomes available.
